So often our perspectives are shaped by the circumstances or the people around us. We can lose sight of the unique gifts that God has given us, which can have an impact on the lives of others.
A seemingly small act of kindness, saying a faith-filled prayer for someone, or whatever faith-motivated act we take, no matter how small, can have an eternal and mountain-moving impact on another’s life.
What is Faith?
The solid ground that makes life easier to live on is Faith. It is essential for us to have faith in our life; it is on par with breathing. Faith nourishes the heart and spirit in the same way that oxygen in the air nourishes the body.
Do we make the most of what we have, or have we chosen that someone else with stronger faith should do the evangelising, praying, or giving when we think about our lives and our faith? Do we withhold because we believe that our contribution will never be sufficient to make a difference?
Prior to commencing the journey of becoming a marketplace minister, I had all these questions and insecurities in my mind. I never imagined that my faith could make a difference in people’s lives. Only those with a higher level of faith seemed capable of making a significant difference in people’s lives or society.
Leaning on God’s understanding, experiencing his mercies each day, co-creating with God at the workplace, and understanding that He wants to do greater things through me have changed my perception of faith. All of which seemed impossible earlier, now seems possible because our God is in control.
In Matthew 17:20, Jesus said, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, move from here to there and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
What does it mean to have a mustard seed faith?
The mustard seed is described as being extremely small. The seed is so small, but it has the potential to grow into a massive tree. Having a mustard seed faith is not about how big or small our faith is but it is the object of our faith. Who do we hold on to? Whom do we rely on?
Mustard seed faith teaches us to put our faith entirely into God’s hand, irrespective of how great or small our faith is. It is about completely trusting God and surrendering our lives to him fully.
Amazing examples of faith in the Bible
Whenever I struggle with my faith and or become uncertain due to the circumstances around me, I reflect on the below amazing examples of displaying faith during challenging times:
The Wall of Jericho:
The Israelites would face their first of many impossible tests after crossing the Jordan River: the impregnable walled city of Jericho. When God led Joshua to Jericho, he led him to an unbeatable city. What Joshua and the Israelites were up against may have seemed impossible to overcome. However, they followed God anyway, fully trusting and hoping in His promise, and believing that He would fight for them to claim the promised land.
Jericho’s walls crumbled as a result of their faith. The city had been routed. God’s promises always come true for those who believe!
Abraham and Isaac:
Abraham was very happy to watch his son Isaac grow up into a man. But then God tested Abraham with a difficult task. God asked him to sacrifice his only son Isaac on the fires of the altar. Abraham did not hesitate and followed what God asked him to do. However, God was pleased with Abraham’s obedience and God displayed faithfulness by providing a ram for the sacrifice.
When I look back on my life, I see God’s unfailing love and mercy for me all along the way. His faithfulness and grace enable me to overcome battles that seem insurmountable.
What does the Bible say we should do to strengthen our faith?
- Ask – If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. (John 15:7)
- Seek – God will always answer those who diligently seek Him. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. (1 Chronicles 16:11)
- Knock – “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. (Matthew 7:7)
- Believe – Because if you believe, whatever you ask for in prayer will be yours. (Matthew 21:22)
The power of our prayer and faith truly has no limits. We have the power and ability to change lives with just mere words. How incredibly beautiful is that?!
John 7:38 “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
Our God truly delights in us. He wants to co-create with us. He cares about every single detail of our lives and when we take the time to enter His Presence with the concerns of our hearts, He listens. He listens and He answers. Know that no word that we speak forth in The Presence of God will go unnoticed.
Our faith is meant to grow and grow! Just like a mustard seed! Let’s build our faith as a mustard seed and move the mountains in our lives!
